Botox
|
Botox is obtained from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. The muscles providing the mimics and movements of our face are bound to the skin above them. As a result of usage for many years the muscles form visible lines and wrinkles. It is possible to relax and soften the wrinkles by relaxing the superficial muscles which are bound to the skin. Owing to looseness of the muscles further wrinkle formation is prevented. As a result, a restful and young appearance is obtained. Without a big operation results obtained by “eyebrow lifting” operation can be acquired by botox.
The most commonly treated regions include the forehead, the regions around the eyes and the region between the eyebrows. With Botox injections the wrinkles around the eyes can be softened, the frowning line between the eyebrows can be decreased and the wrinkles on the forehead can be reduced. In addition, Botox can be used for treatment of neck lines and reduction of eyebrows in time. However, probably its most important property is that it completely stops the aging of the upper part of the face by displaying a long-term effect in time.
A very small part of the diluted drug is injected into the muscles on the targeted region. This procedure is performed in the treatment room, while you are sitting in an upright position in a very rapid way. Keeping the upright position for 1-2 hours after treatment is very important to provide Botox drug to stay at the region where it is injected. In addition, exercise should be applied to the muscles where the drug is administered during this period.
Some patients may feel tingling during Botox injection. However, feeling of pain is seen in rare occasions. Applying anesthetic creams on the regions where injections will be applied before treatment would decrease discomfort associated with the injections.
For many people the results are permanent between 3 months and 6 months. In patients with larger facial muscles (like men) or in individuals who have many mimics and who use their facial muscles more, treatment may need to be applied between shorter time intervals. Generally, facial muscles are almost “educated” not to move much as a result of Botox injections. By the time, less Botox is needed to relieve the lines and wrinkles. The main rule is to apply Botox every 4 months initially and every 6 months following the first year.
Since the effects of Botox injections are not permanent, it has no or few side effects. Mild bruising and redness may be observed on the injection points. Headache is also a mentioned side effect. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should wait for injections during this period. Patients with neuromuscular diseases or bleeding problems and skin irritation or disease on the region desired to be applied are not good candidates for Botox injections.

- Do not take aspirin or drugs containing aspirin; discontinue non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs 10 days before the application. These drugs can increase the possibility of bleeding and/or bruising. - Do not consume alcohol for one week before the application. |
