Gynecomastia/ Breast Reduction Operation in Men
|
Gynecomastia which means breast enlargement in men affects approximately 40-60% of men. This problem may develop in one breast or in both breasts. Although some drugs and medical problems have been associated with gynecomastia, a known cause is not present in most cases.
Gynecomastia procedure can be performed in all healthy men older than 18 years of age.
The first consultation with your surgeon is very important. When your physician knows how much adipose and gland tissue you have in your breasts, he/she can select the most appropriate surgical approach. First of all, your surgeon will check your breasts and try to understand the reason of gynecomastia. If a medical condition is suspected, you are referred to an appropriate specialist.
Your plastic surgeon will give you special instructions about eating, drinking, and some vitamins and drugs for preparation for the operation. Breast reduction procedure in men is usually performed without hospitalization, but in some cases, you may be recommended to stay at the hospital for one night. The operation is completed in 1-1,5 hours.
Correction of enlarged breasts in men is generally performed with a combination of local anesthesia and sedative drugs. More comprehensive corrections may be performed under general anesthesia and the patient sleeps during the whole operation. Your surgeon will explain to you which option is appropriate for you and why this option is recommended.
If excessive breast tissue is the main reason for gynecomastia, this tissue is removed. This procedure can be performed in combination with liposhaping or alone. In a typical procedure, the incision is made on the areola. While working with the incision method excessive skin, adipose and breast tissue are removed from the area surrounding the areola, the sides of the chest and under-breast area.
You may feel discomfort for a few days after the intervention, but this can be controlled by simple analgesics prescribed by your surgeon. To decrease possible swelling you will be asked to wear a corset every day for 1-2 weeks and afterwards during the night for a few weeks. Although most swelling is relieved in the first few weeks, you may need to wait to observe the effect of the operation for 3 months or more.
It is recommended to walk on the same day just after the operation and return to work when you feel yourself well enough (in 1-2 days after the operation). The sutures are removed in 1-2 weeks after the operation. You should avoid work and sportive activities which carry a risk of beat on the chest region at least for 4 weeks.
Before deciding on the operation you should think carefully about your expectations and share your view with your plastic surgeon. The result of the operation is permanent.
