Eyebrow Transplantation
|
Eyes are the most characteristic part of the face. Eyebrows surround the eyes and reveal the expression of the face. Sometime the eyebrows may thin or be lost completely because of factors including systemic diseases like thyroid disease, burns, and infections, shaving for a long time (especially in artists and models), tattoo applications and genetic factors. This affects the facial expression negatively.
A person may desire to thicken his/her eyebrows because of reasons mentioned above or because of cosmetic requests depending on the fashion.
There is no cosmetic therapy or drug therapy for growing new hair on the regions where hair is lost. The same is valid for eyebrows.
Currently, many well-kept men and women who especially place emphasis on a healthy appearance prefer eyebrow transplantation for lost eyebrows.
What is eyebrow transplantation, how is it performed? Eyebrow transplantation is the procedure of transplanting hair roots which are healthy and programmed not to be lost for a life time extracted from the area between the ears which is called the donor area to the region of the eyebrows.
This procedure starts with the patient’s decision on the eyebrow shape he/she wants which he/she makes together with the surgeon. Afterwards, a mild sedative agent is given to the patient and local anesthesia is applied on the region where the procedure will be performed. The procedure lasts approximately for one hour and it is possible to take a bath 24 hours after the procedure.
After the procedure mild crusting and erythema is observed on the region of transplantation for 4 days. The area of transplantation recovers completely at the end of the 6th-7th day. Full growth of the transplanted eyebrows occurs in 3-6 months. Although a second procedure is not required in most cases, an evaluation is made at the end of the 6th month and it is aimed to reach the desired result with a second session, if necessary.
Eyebrow transplantation is a procedure which requires expertise, because the hairs in the region of eyebrow have different angles and directions compared to the hair on the scalp. While the hair comes out from the scalp with an angle of 45 degrees, they are nearly parallel to the skin in the eyebrow region. The roots in this region grow vertically in the area of cross-section with the nose, downwards in the upper eyebrow area and upwards in the inferior eyebrow area. At the end where they combine they are transformed into a single line. The roots extracted from the scalp should be placed as extra thinned follicular units in very small channels in the skin so that no scar is left after the operation and a natural appearance is achieved. Because of all these reasons your new eyebrows should be shaped by an expert plastic surgeon.
There is no complication which can occur during eyebrow transplantation. However, it should be kept in mind that the eyebrows grow much less than the hair. Therefore, your new eyebrows will grow faster compared to your original eyebrows especially in the first year after eyebrow transplantation. After the first year your new eyebrows will adapt to the growth rhythm of the area where they are present.
